Elan

Elan began inside Square D. In 1994 Square D decided to sell the operation and, in September 1995, Bob Farinelli and a group of investors made an offer to buy it. Elan Home Systems, of Lexington, Kentucky, appears in the state's records with an organisation date of August 1995. Farinelli and Paul Starkey were the original partners, and the first product was a six-channel audio device to play different music in six rooms, sketched on a napkin and brought to market in about six months.

By 1998 the company's revenue had already doubled, and it began building a complete product catalogue. In January 2003, Linear, a Nortek subsidiary, bought Elan, and manufacturing moved to China. Elan bought Sunfire in 2005 and HOMELOGIC in 2007, and that year launched the ATON line of products that are simpler to install, for those who do not need professional programming. A 2012 report said it sold more than 600 products in 58 countries from Lexington, where product development was concentrated.

In 2021, the Italian company Nice bought Nortek Security & Control from Melrose Industries for US$ 285 million, and Elan became part of the group. In 2023, Nice completed the transition of the Elan, SpeakerCraft and Panamax Energy Management brands to the Nice name, and the company's website now reads 'ELAN is now Nice'. The control platform keeps evolving, now as Nice Home Management, and ELAN OS 9 is the latest version of the system, according to Nice itself.
