Definitive Technology
Bipolar towers and ultra-slim speakers for home theater
About the brand
Definitive Technology
Definitive Technology was founded in 1990 in Owings Mills, Maryland, by Sandy Gross, who had left Polk Audio in 1988, and by his Canadian partners Don Givogue and Ed Blais. Its first products were monolithic bipolar towers, with drivers on the front and back of the cabinet radiating in phase in both directions. The BP2000, a tower with six drivers and a built-in 15-inch, 300 W subwoofer, appears in reviews from 1996.
In the mid-2000s, Directed Electronics bought Definitive, which became an audio division alongside Polk Audio. Directed became DEI Holdings in 2008, and in April 2013 Polk, Definitive and Boom Movement were brought together in the Sound United division. Gross announced his retirement in March 2009. Masimo paid close to US$ 1 billion for Sound United in 2022 and, in 2025, agreed to sell it to Harman, a Samsung subsidiary, for US$ 350 million; Definitive is among the brands included in the deal.
Dymension is the line of slim towers and center channels with balanced bipolar arrays. The DM40 has an attenuation switch for the rear array, for use near a wall, and the DM20 uses four 4-inch midrange drivers and a 1-inch aluminium oxide tweeter. Mythos, a range of LCR speakers and passive soundbars to mount on the wall, was reintroduced at CEDIA 2023 with IP66 protection, allowing outdoor use. In 2015, the W7 was launched with Play-Fi for wireless multiroom audio.
